What Is Whisky Bridges Co., Ltd.?|Ihatov Malt and Blender’s House Tsunagi: The Basics
2026.10.13
In short: A fact sheet on Whisky Bridges Co., Ltd., founded in 2026 in Tsunagi, Morioka, by Taro Okuyama, formerly a blender at Chichibu Distillery (Ichiro’s Malt). A blending-only whisky maker with no still: it buys spirit matured 3 years or more from 6 Japanese distilleries, matures it at least 1 more year at Blender’s House Tsunagi (the former Tsunagi Kindergarten by Lake Gosho), blends and bottles in-house, and releases no single malts. Brand name Ihatov Malt, used with the Miyazawa family’s permission; launch expected in spring 2028. Compiled from my visit and public information by Mika Tanimoto, Bar Little Happiness, Hiroshima.
In 2026, Whisky Bridges Co., Ltd. was born in Tsunagi, Morioka, Iwate Prefecture.
It owns no still, and makes whisky solely from spirit produced by other companies.
A company with almost no precedent in Japan.
It has no website yet.
So a search turns up no organized information.
Here I set out what I heard from the founder, Taro Okuyama, when I visited Tsunagi in Morioka, together with the information that has been made public.
My visit report is in this post.

What is Whisky Bridges Co., Ltd.?
It buys matured spirit from several distilleries, matures it further, blends it, and bottles it.
A whisky maker dedicated to blending, handling that entire process in-house.
The founder is Taro Okuyama, who served as a blender at Chichibu Distillery, home of Ichiro’s Malt.
The business is close to that of Compass Box in the UK.
In June 2026, Mr. Okuyama visited Compass Box’s head office in London, and was told it was a welcome thing that such a business could exist in Japan.
At an online briefing, asked whether this would be Japan’s first blending business, Mr. Okuyama answered, “I believe it probably is.”

How the business works
The process goes like this.
1. Buy spirit
Purchase matured spirit, cask by cask, from several distilleries in Japan.
2. Mature it further
Let it rest longer in the warehouse in Tsunagi, Morioka.
3. Blend
Draw the spirit at the right moment, according to the product concept, and blend it.
4. Bottle
From bottling to shipping, all done in-house.
There is no outsourcing of bottling alone, either.
The only thing they cannot do is make whisky from raw materials; every step after that is done in-house, start to finish.
Three policies
No single malt releases
A single-distillery release is something that distillery’s official range can do.
Since they are being given spirit from so many distilleries, they want to blend all of it into their products.
That is the policy, he says.
The product categories will therefore be blended malt and blended whisky.
Buy spirit matured 3 years or more (Welcoming 3yo+)
They buy spirit that has already matured 3 years or more, not new-make.
The fact of having rested 3 years in that distillery’s environment is there in the spirit.
That is what they want to use.
On top of that, it is matured at least 1 more year in the environment of Tsunagi, Morioka, before release.
From additional maturation to bottling, all in-house
No contractors in between.
So the blender’s intent goes into the bottle as it is.
Where the spirit comes from
Supply agreements have already been concluded with 6 distilleries in Japan.
The distillery names are not disclosed at this point.
In June 2026 he visited Scotland, where sourcing of spirit is under negotiation.
He visited around 5 to 6 brokers and 3 or so independent bottlers.
This is due to be announced formally in time.
What is Ihatov Malt?
It is the brand name.
Ihatov is a coined word for the utopia imagined by Kenji Miyazawa, the poet and author from Hanamaki, Iwate.
To use it as a brand name, formal permission was obtained from Kazuki Miyazawa (president of Rinpoosha), grandson of Kenji’s younger brother Seiroku, and the trademark registration is complete.
He named it, he said, as a statement of the will to keep pursuing an ideal.
Products that include grain spirit will be “Ihatov Malt & Grain.”
What is Blender’s House Tsunagi?
It is the name of the production base.
There was no word in the world for a production base that is not a distillery but is devoted to blending.
So Mr. Okuyama coined one himself.
| Location | Tsunagi, Morioka — former Tsunagi Kindergarten |
| Contract | Utilization agreement signed with Morioka City on July 17, 2026 |
| Warehouse | Up to 200 casks |
| Long-term goal | 10,000 casks |

The former Tsunagi Kindergarten is a school building that closed on March 31, 2019 (Heisei 31).
It stands on the shore of Lake Gosho, and on a clear day Mt. Iwate is visible.
A maturation warehouse right in front of a lake is probably without precedent in Japan.
Beneath the grounds lie buried cultural relics from the Jomon period; dig less than a meter and pottery comes out.
Near the shrine close by is a spring called “Hyakkoi Water,” and the plan is to use tap water from the same source.

About the logo
The symbol is a Highland cow.
It expresses respect for Scotland’s whisky culture.
Around it is a border in the image of a whisky cask, with the words Ihatov Malt across the top.
The concept is blending WHISKY BRIDGES world.
It means crossing every wall and connecting everything.
It was completed after much trial and error, starting in 2025.

About Taro Okuyama
Born in Morioka.
After university in Shizuoka, he joined Venture Whisky’s Chichibu Distillery.
After working as a blender responsible for quality control of maturing spirit, he returned to Iwate and founded Whisky Bridges.
On going independent, he received no supply of spirit from president Ichiro Akuto.
Told “If you’re going to lean on Chichibu, don’t go independent,” he negotiated with 6 distilleries himself.
For the person behind it, and the formative experiences that led to the founding, see Ex-Ichiro’s Malt Blender Taro Okuyama Takes On Japan’s First Blending Business.

Frequently asked questions
Is it not a distillery?
It has no still, so it is not a distillery. It is a production base that buys spirit from other companies and carries out maturation and blending. Mr. Okuyama calls this a “blender’s house.”
Which distilleries’ spirit will be used?
Supply agreements have been concluded with 6 distilleries in Japan, but their names are not disclosed at this point. Scottish spirit is also under negotiation.
Will there be no single malts?
No. This follows the policy of blending spirit from every distillery they buy from into their products.
When can we drink it?
The launch is expected in spring 2028.
Can we drink it in Hiroshima?
Once it launches, I hope to serve it at the counter of Bar Little Happiness. I am looking forward to that day.
There is nothing to drink yet.
But it is a company where every one of its names has a reason, and all those reasons connect.
