We’ve received the visitor-center-exclusive “Single Malt Japanese Whisky SAKURAO Bordeaux Red Wine Cask (SAKURAO DISCOVERY)”!

The Ultimate Exclusive — Found Only at the Visitor Center

This is a limited bottling available only at the Sakurao Distillery Visitor Center in Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima.

Even for those of us who live nearby, it’s a special bottle you can only encounter by making the trip in person.

It truly lives up to the “DISCOVERY” name — an invitation to explore where Sakurao is right now.

Luxurious Layers Painted by Bordeaux Red

Honestly, the specs alone tell you it’s going to be delicious.

Official tasting note:

A new-make spirit with estery aromas, layered with elegant sweetness and fresh, fruity notes.

Sweet, gentle cacao aromas meet a soft peatiness; the palate harmonizes the smooth sweetness of bitter chocolate with a cassis-like acidity, finishing with the deep, weighty echo of red wine.

What “A New-Make Spirit with Estery Aromas” Really Tells Us

There’s one phrase in the official tasting note we find especially moving: “a new-make spirit with estery aromas.”

Sakurao Brewery and Distillery, which runs the Sakurao Distillery, is a century-old company founded in 1918, with a long heritage of crafting sake and shochu. That history has given them beautifully refined skills in fermentation and distillation.

Usually, the gorgeous “estery” aromas in whisky come from compounds born during fermentation that only fully blossom after years of maturation. With Sakurao, though, something remarkable happens: their craftsmanship coaxes out vivid, lovely aromas reminiscent of banana and apple already at the new-make stage — the very moment the spirit is distilled, before it ever rests in a cask.

In other words, rather than waiting for aromas to emerge through the slow chemistry of maturation, they seem to design a new-make spirit brimming with potential from the very beginning, and then let it meet the character of a Bordeaux cask.

We can almost sense the distillery’s quiet confidence and devotion in every drop — and it feels like a bottle where tradition and innovation come together as one.

A second distillery, the Sakurao Forest Site, is set to open within the year, and we have a feeling that whisky made at the current Sakurao Distillery will come to hold an ever more special place in the years ahead.

Just as Yamazaki once won the world’s admiration, we find ourselves dreaming of a day when people travel to Hiroshima from all over the world…

Every encounter is meant to be. Welcome to the world of Rum & Whisky.

“Both whisky and rum become even more beautiful the moment you feel the maker’s heart.”

Eine sehr große und erlesene Auswahl insbesondere an japanischen Whiskys. Etwas hochpreisiger insgesamt, aber, wenn man Whisky mag, definitiv zu empfehlen.

Loved this cosy and chilled little place. The collection of rums and whisky/whiskey from around the world is very impressive and we enjoyed trying the Togouchi single malt and a punchy single barrel rum. Mika has created a lovely atmosphere in this charming spot – the best I’ve experienced while in Japan.
