Another Yamazaki, in the City: A Visit to THE YAMAZAKI DISTILLERY EXPERIENCE in Umeda, Osaka
2026.10.05
In short: can’t get a tour at Suntory’s Yamazaki Distillery? THE YAMAZAKI DISTILLERY EXPERIENCE, opened in 2025 in Umeda, Osaka, offers an immersive film theatre with seats made from whisky casks, a Yamazaki 12 Years Old and chocolate pairing, and a restaurant serving Hakushu bacon pasta. By Mika Tanimoto, owner of Bar Little Happiness in Hiroshima.
“I want to visit Yamazaki Distillery, but I can’t get a reservation.”
If that’s you, I especially recommend
a new facility that opened in 2025 in Umeda, Osaka —
THE YAMAZAKI DISTILLERY EXPERIENCE.
For me, too, the trigger was exactly that: “I couldn’t get a reservation at the distillery.”
So I went to this facility, which happened to have a slot open,
and a wonderful experience was waiting!
A quiet, immersive space of casks and memories
That day, by chance, I had the session all to myself.
A theatre that normally seats nine, all mine — what a luxury.
On the large screens, the nature, sounds and production process of Yamazaki Distillery were beautifully projected,
and light and sound unfolded around them, wrapping the whole space.
The tour begins quietly with a clear sound like spring water (probably),
and it feels like listening to the breathing of the distillery itself.
Through the images, you can relive places you can’t enter on a normal tour —
a “Yamazaki” seen through a completely new approach.
Especially the moment the lower structure of the pot stills was carefully shown,
the beauty and sense of presence took my breath away.
It ends quietly with the sound of ice clinking in a rocks glass (I think).
The seats are chairs remade from whisky casks actually used for maturation.
The warmth and even the scent of that wood stay with you as part of the experience.

— Come to think of it, I once visited Yamazaki Distillery with guests and staff.
Everyone was smiling and happy, and I still remember that time warmly.
The tasting experience and “The Scent of Yamazaki”

With the afterglow of the film still lingering, we moved to the adjoining tasting bar.
That day it was a pairing of Yamazaki 12 Years Old with the fresh chocolate “Yamazaki no Kaori” (The Scent of Yamazaki).
In blender’s glasses that let you feel the aroma deeply, you could try it neat, on the rocks and as a highball.
As a bite of chocolate melts on top,
Yamazaki’s cask aroma and sweetness quietly layer together.
Having it all to myself and pairing while listening to the explanation was a luxurious experience!
Actually… the restaurant next door is really good

I also stopped by the restaurant on the same floor.
I went in thinking of it as a “bonus,” but —
it was so good!
● Perfect operation by the staff
● Pasta with Hakushu bacon — irresistible for whisky lovers
● Seasoning perfectly balanced to go with highballs
I didn’t expect lunch to be so satisfying — a happy surprise.
Restaurant → immersive experience → tasting:
it felt like a half-day trip!
Hard-to-get reservations, and another door
Tour reservations at Yamazaki Distillery itself now fill up within minutes.
That’s exactly why this urban experience facility is so valuable.
“A place where you can truly feel the world of Yamazaki, even if you can’t go to the distillery.”
That was THE YAMAZAKI DISTILLERY EXPERIENCE.
Finally
The day I happened to go, I had it to myself;
the restaurant I happened to walk into was delicious.
But maybe it was a reward for all the time I’ve spent with whisky 💛
Here are some photos.
