The Magic of a Small Cask: The Depth an Octave Cask Draws from Highland Park
2026.10.05
In short: A Highland Park 12 Year Old (distilled 2005) from Duncan Taylor’s Octave series, finished in a small octave cask and limited to 75 bottles. Small-cask maturation adds remarkable depth to Highland Park’s soft, herbal peat. Tasting notes and who it suits.
At first glance, it looks like an ordinary 12-year-old bottle. But one sniff of its aroma overturns that impression.
Combining the character of Orkney with the subtle art of small-cask maturation,
this Highland Park is a bottle that makes you feel “depth” rather than time.

🟨 Small-Cask Maturation: A Quiet Magic
A concentrated flavour that only a small cask can produce.
This time I introduce a Highland Park 12 Year Old matured in an octave cask.
Distilled in 2005 and bottled in 2017.
From this limited bottling of just 75 bottles, you can feel
the climate of the Orkney Islands and quietly deepened time.
🟨 Highland Park and Small Casks: A Perfect Match
Highland Park’s distinctive peat is not powerful like Islay’s,
but somehow herbal and soft.
Add the intense extraction of an octave cask,
and you get a depth you wouldn’t expect from such a short maturation.
🟨 Tasting Notes
- Nose: gentle smoke, malty sweetness, sea breeze
- Palate: burnt caramel, black tea, dark fruit
- Finish: warm peat and woodiness that linger gently
🟨 What Makes This Bottle Special
It was selected by the independent bottler Duncan Taylor,
from its “Octave” series, which is devoted to small-cask maturation.
A limited number of bottles, no added water, non-chill-filtered.
A truly once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
🟨 Who Is It For?
Those looking for gentle smoke that even people who dislike peat can enjoy
Those who want to experience a matured character in a short-aged whisky
Those who want to see Highland Park’s “different face”
