In short: Ardbeg DOLCE is the Ardbeg Day 2026 limited bottling (theme: “La Dolce Islay,” after Fellini’s La Dolce Vita), vatting Ardbeg matured in Sicilian Marsala Dolce sweet wine casks with Ardbeg from bourbon casks — the Peaty Paradox at its most vivid. Plus a first visit to Ardbeg in 2009 and a surprise Ardbeg 25 Year Old in the box. By Mika Tanimoto, Bar Little Happiness, Hiroshima.

Once a year, there is a day when Ardbeggians all over the world go wild for the same bottle.

That celebration is called Ardbeg Day.

And every year, a special limited bottle is born for that day.

The 2026 bottle is this: “DOLCE” 🥃

What is “DOLCE,” the Ardbeg Day 2026 limited bottling?

“Ardbeg Day” is the celebration of Ardbeggians (Ardbeg lovers) held on the final day of Fèis Ìle, Islay’s festival of music and whisky.

Ardbeg Day 2026 fell on Saturday 30 May. That year’s limited bottling is “DOLCE.”

The 2026 theme: “La Dolce Islay”

The 2026 theme is La Dolce Islay.

It is an homage to the 1960s Italian film classic “La Dolce Vita.”

Screenshot related to Fellini’s film La Dolce Vita.

Fellini’s film depicted the glamorous high society of Rome.

A “sweet life” full of pleasure and excitement that everyone envied.

But behind that sweetness lay emptiness and loneliness.

Even so — thanks to this film, the phrase “dolce vita” took on a life of its own.

Dior perfume, Longines watches, Ferrari.

Before long, it came to be loved around the world as a phrase for “an elegant, sweet life.”

To that longed-for sweetness, Ardbeg finally added this:

“And very smoky.”

The bittersweetness the film only hinted at, Ardbeg boldly brought to the surface as peat smoke.

A spoonful of their own smoke in a sweetness everyone longs for.

Italy’s luscious world, Islay’s wild nature and powerful peat.

Sicily and Islay — two islands meeting in one bottle.

A dramatic bottle.

Marsala Dolce — Sicily’s luscious fortified wine

DOLCE’s biggest feature lies in the casks used to mature it.

Sicilian Marsala Dolce sweet wine casks × bourbon casks.

“Marsala wine” is a fortified wine made in the town of Marsala in western Sicily. “Dolce” is its sweetest style.

A unique sweetness, different again from sherry casks: candied fruit, raisins, apricot, vanilla.

Ardbeg matured in these Marsala casks is vatted with Ardbeg matured in classic bourbon casks.

The “Peaty Paradox” — the essence of Ardbeg

The essence of Ardbeg is the Peaty Paradox.

Behind intensely smoky peat hides a contradictory element: fruitiness.

That vivid contrast is Ardbeg’s greatest charm.

And DOLCE paints it more vividly than ever, with the lusciousness of Marsala Dolce and the peat of Islay 🥃

Official tasting notes

[Aroma]

Rich and deep. Apricot, plump raisins and sticky dates, brightly joined by the crisp burst of green apple.

Orange marmalade adds citrus brightness throughout, lifting the aroma even further.

Breathe in deeply and deeper, earthier aromas appear: roasted mushrooms, pine needles, salted fish, capers and olives.

It gives an original harmony of aromas, as if Islay’s majestic nature had met a cheerful Sicilian garden.

[Palate]

On the palate, the zingy spice of cinnamon, star anise and liquorice stimulates the taste buds first.

Then comes a deep, rich sweetness: maple-smoked wood, baked dates with walnuts, honey and dark chocolate.

Dried fruit follows, accented by fresh lemon peel, while savoury notes of salted nuts and dried herbs bring a perfect balance.

[Finish]

Smoked wood, dry tobacco, the embers of a bonfire and Ardbeg’s characteristic rich peat oil leave a deep, long and pleasant finish in the mouth.

Islay, and the passing years

In fact, the first distillery I ever visited abroad was on Islay.

That was about 17 years ago — in 2009 🥃

It was just after I had founded Little Happiness and moved to our current location. I had no money and it was a hard time, but I stretched myself with what little resolve I had and went all the way to Islay.

At Ardbeg Distillery, then under renovation, I fell in love at first sight with “Ardbeg Lord of the Isles” and brought it home.

I wrote about how earnest I felt back then in an earlier column.

17 years have passed since then.

The back bar at Little Happiness now has many Ardbeg bottles, including rare discontinued ones.

And the newest addition is “DOLCE” 🥃

And then — when I opened the box, I couldn’t help crying out. Along with DOLCE, there was an Ardbeg 25 Year Old inside.

Pure joy 🥃

When I looked it up, it seems it was included only for 2,000 people worldwide who won a draw. I’m so happy!!

In 2009, just after the move, with no money, I made up my mind — “this one, no matter what” — and brought home Lord of the Isles.

And in 2026, out of a cardboard box came DOLCE and the 25 Year Old.

17 years are connected in one back bar.

“Whisky is a mirror that reflects the time you have kept going.”

Those words suddenly crossed my mind 🥃

“Both whisky and rum taste even better when you touch the feelings of the people who make them.”

Every encounter is meant to be.

Welcome to the world of Rum&Whisky 🥃
