In short: Single Malt Akashi 5 Year Old PX Sherry Cask, Cask Strength (62%), bottled for Whisky Messe 2023 by Eigashima Shuzo in Akashi, Hyogo — dark cherry, prunes and raisins with spice and acidity, “the finest dessert for grown-ups.” Best neat, with butterscotch or espresso chocolate. From Bar Little Happiness, Hiroshima.

To end tonight: the finest dessert for grown-ups | the temptation of Akashi PX Cask

Yesterday, snow actually settled in Hiroshima — a rare sight.

How many years has it been since the city was painted this white?

A Sunday in February that also coincided with an election, with a somehow special air.

Carrying the lingering mood of that quiet night, what Little Happiness wants to recommend tonight is less a drink than “the finest dessert for grown-ups.”

It is “Single Malt Akashi 5 Year Old PX Sherry Cask, Cask Strength, For Whisky Messe 2023” from Eigashima Shuzo, an old brewery in Akashi, Hyogo.

A luxurious résumé called “PX cask”

Have you ever noticed words like “___ cask” on the back of a whisky bottle?

That is something like a résumé: “what kind of drink’s cask this whisky slept in.”

“PX” here stands for Pedro Ximénez, a very sweet sherry said to be the sweetest in the world.

In a cask soaked through with that superb wine, “Akashi” slept for 5 years.

As a result, it absorbed to the full the concentrated sweetness of raisins and dried fruit typical of PX casks, giving the glass this alluring amber colour.

A little of the official tasting notes, too.

It isn’t just sweet.

Don’t you think this complexity, woven from spice and acidity, is truly “the finest dessert for grown-ups”?

“I’ve grown out of sweets that are only sweet, but I still want a luxurious sweetness fit to end the night”…

A glass that hits the spot for grown-ups with exactly that selfish wish.

A little way to enjoy it, from Little Happiness

This is cask strength (bottled straight from the cask), so the alcohol is quite high (62%) —

but that means the flavour is concentrated to the limit.

First, please try it neat.

Enjoy the heat sliding down your throat and the parade of dried fruit rising through your nose.

Like snow melting, the aroma gently blooms, and a special time begins.

For chocolate pairings, I suggest “butterscotch” and “espresso.”

With the two chocolates, enjoy a marriage in which the whisky shows a different face each time. 🎵

Every encounter is meant to be. Welcome to the world of Rum&Whisky.
