Octomore 16 Series: The Philosophy of “Challenge” in a Black Bottle
2026.10.05
In short: Octomore, the super-heavily peated whisky from Bruichladdich on Islay, stands out with its opaque black bottle. I look at Bruichladdich’s three brands, its “pioneers, provocateurs and progressives” philosophy, and the Octomore 16 series (16.1, 16.2, 16.3) at our bar.
When I visited Bruichladdich Distillery on Islay some years ago, my first thought was, “What a cute distillery.”
(The pot still sculpture at the entrance. Full of playfulness.)

(A photo from my trip to Islay, Scotland, around 2009. Back then I used SD cards, and the data for most of my photos is corrupted and unusable… sob)
The meaning of Octomore’s black bottle?
To begin with, I don’t even remember whether it had been released yet… (sweat)
At the time, I didn’t notice it at all.
But looking at this bottle again now, I can see things I couldn’t see back then.
This year, the Octomore 16 series has arrived again.
An opaque, deep black.
A slender silhouette.
And a minimal label!

It’s a bottle Islay fans look forward to every year!
With its ppm records broken again and again, it has become like an annual festival.
In fact, when Octomore first appeared, this black bottle was already “one of a kind.”
Because whisky bottles are, for the most part, clear.
You can see the amber liquid.
Many people find that beautiful.
But Octomore was different.
Opaque black.
You can’t see what’s inside.
It seemed to be saying, “You don’t need to see it.”
In fact, when you line it up on a bar shelf, it has a presence unlike any other bottle.
Guests stop and look at it, too.
It may be the bottle I am most often asked about: “What is this?”
A Distillery with Three Faces
Octomore is one of three brands made by Bruichladdich.
1. Bruichladdich
Unpeated.
Delicate and fruity.
A rare style on Islay.
2. Port Charlotte
Heavily peated (40ppm).
Smoky, yet elegant.
It was the first distillation after the distillery reopened.
3. Octomore
Super-heavily peated (100ppm to over 300ppm).
The smokiest whisky in the world.
It began as an experiment in 2002.
In other words: unpeated, heavily peated, and super-heavily peated.
Three different philosophies, at the same distillery.
This is the Bruichladdich way.
Bruichladdich’s official philosophy states:
“To create the most thought-provoking spirits”
And they defined themselves like this:
“We have chosen to be pioneers, provocateurs and progressives”
I think Octomore’s black bottle embodies exactly those words.
Questioning convention, forging a new path.
In looks, and in philosophy.
When you think about it, in a whisky industry where clear bottles are “the norm,”
choosing opaque black was a revolution.
Every time I pick up this bottle, I think:
an attitude of taking on new challenges is wonderful.
Doing what no one else is doing.
That takes courage.
But that is where the future lies!!
Even in its design alone, Octomore is challenging established ideas.
By the way, this year’s Octomore 16 series has also arrived at Little Happiness (still in stock as of October 2026).
