Just In: Niigata Kameda “Heavily Peated Peach Brandy Cask” & Sakura Head
2026.10.05
In short: two ultra-small-batch bottlings (90 bottles each, approx. 50ppm) from Kameda Distillery in Niigata, Japan — Heavily Peated Peach Brandy Cask (63%) and its sister with cherry-wood cask heads, Sakura Head (59%). President Douta’s idea: if people find peach in his whisky, why not use a real peach brandy cask? Plus Kameda’s “sweet peat” and narrow middle cut. From Bar Little Happiness, Hiroshima.
While I was still buzzing from my recent “inside report” on Kameda Distillery in Niigata, an incredible pair of bottles arrived.
These new arrivals are bottles that crystallise the “remarkable trial and error” President Douta of Kameda Distillery has repeated again and again!
Bottle specs:

- Peach Brandy Cask
- Type: heavily peated (approx. 50ppm) / ABV: 63% / Limited to 90 bottles
- Tasting notes: ripe peach, apricot, smoky, strawberry, peach nectar, light spice.

- Peach Brandy Cask – Sakura Head
- Type: heavily peated (approx. 50ppm) / ABV: 59% / Limited to 90 bottles
- Tasting notes: cherry, sakura mochi, almond (annin), toffee, candy, vanilla.
Sister bottles that differ only in whether the cask head is made of “sakura” (cherry wood).
Why “peach brandy”?
When I visited the distillery, President Douta said this with a mischievous smile:
“If so many people find ‘peach’ in our whisky, wouldn’t it be fun to put it into a real peach brandy cask?”
From that simple yet bold idea, I believe this peach brandy cask was chosen in pursuit of a fruitiness that makes everyone agree, “See, there’s the peach.”
The Japanese nuance of the “sakura head”
This one uses a “sakura head cask,” with cask heads made of cherry wood.
Cherry wood made by Ariake Sangyo is very aromatic and gives the spirit a sweet, bright fragrance.
The sweetness of peach brandy and the Japanese nuance of sakura overlap, creating more complex layers.
The ultimate in Kameda-style “sweet peat”
President Douta told me his ideal is “not medicinal peat, but sweet peat with a long finish.”
To achieve this, the middle cut during distillation is deliberately kept narrow.
By thoroughly removing unwanted off-notes, the peat comes across as surprisingly clean and full of umami, even though it is heavily peated.

An ultra-small batch of only 90 bottles worldwide — possible only because President Douta ran some 300 batches almost single-handedly in the distillery’s first year, experimenting again and again.
The president’s pure wish — “for the people who think my whisky is delicious” — is dissolved into this whisky.
Far away in Hiroshima, at the Little Happiness counter —
please come and experience these whiskies from Kameda Distillery: a one-in-90 miracle!
