From Apple Pie Apples to a Walnut Finish: G&M Glentauchers 2008
2026.10.05
In short: Gordon & MacPhail Glentauchers 2008 — a Distillery Label bottling from the Speyside distillery long prized as a key malt for Ballantine’s. Stewed apple and apple pie, orange peel and raspberry, then clove, anise and a walnut finish. From Bar Little Happiness, Hiroshima.
On the Little Happiness back bar, one bottler gives our line-up depth with consistently high quality: the long-established Gordon & MacPhail (G&M).
Their “Distillery Labels” in particular carefully draw out each distillery’s natural character — standard bottlings, yet with a high-quality finish.
This time, one of them: “Glentauchers 2008.”
The key to this bottle is a layered story of “apple” that changes its expression over time.
The pride of a hidden master, “Glentauchers”
Let me say a little more about Glentauchers Distillery.
Founded in Speyside, Glentauchers has long supported the reputation of blended whisky from behind the scenes as “an important spirit for blends.”
It is known in particular as one of the key malts of “Ballantine’s,” and blenders have long praised its “bright, fruity style” and “clean spirit without any off-notes.”
Because it rarely reached the market as a single malt, it was once something of a “hidden gem,” but recently its high potential has been attracting new attention.
There is no flashy advertising, but for makers who pursue whisky’s natural “cleanness,” Glentauchers is a name you can’t leave out.

Aromas of “stewed apples” that awaken memories
This 2008 vintage is where G&M has beautifully drawn out Glentauchers’ virtues.
The first thing that reaches you as you bring the glass close is the rich aroma of apples stewed slowly with a vanilla pod.
Rather than fresh, juicy fruit, it is the nuance of “those apples” inside a freshly baked apple pie, their sweetness concentrated by the oven’s heat.
Candied orange peel and a raspberry compote dressed in cinnamon spice layer on top, deepening the aroma further.
This melting together of sweetness and spice is what a clean Speyside whisky is all about.

(From my 2018 visit)
A precisely calculated “gradation of taste”
On the palate, the juiciness of apple and pear with a lovely texture lifts the deep, rich sweetness of demerara sugar.
What’s interesting is how it changes from here.
The warm nuance of clove, as you roll it on your tongue, vividly transforms into anise and a faint pepper.
This precise structure of “fruit → sweetness → spice” is possible only thanks to G&M’s selection and control of maturation.

The quiet destination left by walnuts
A medium-bodied finish.
A pleasant spicy kick and the toasty, nutty finish of walnuts linger on and on.
The “balance” polished as a backbone of blends, and the “distinctive fruitiness” that has blossomed as a single malt.
The honours student of Speyside — endlessly clean, never losing its dignity.
Tonight, unravel this complex gradation slowly…
Every encounter is meant to be. Welcome to the world of Rum&Whisky.
