Light that doesn’t over-illuminate can look after you

Candlelight and low lighting at Bar Little Happiness, a whisky bar in Hiroshima

The lighting in this bar is on the dim side.
But it isn’t darkness for the sake of not lighting things ──

it’s a brightness chosen so as not to light them too much.

So that conversation isn’t hurried along,
the level is set so the edges of your vision dissolve a little.

Light that gives the whisky in the glass a slight sheen.
Light that softens skin,
gentle enough that a flush from drinking is nothing to worry about.

Alone or with someone,
light dim enough that your own outline blurs a little —
maybe that’s just right for a person, too.

One candle on each table.
With a flame there, voices settle a little on their own.

The space around that small light
starts to feel like an island of your own.

The boundary with everything around you stays soft,
while the air between you and the person opposite quietly deepens.

And then, in contrast ──
the washroom is properly bright.

Bright enough to straighten your back a little,
so you can see your own face clearly.
Where light is needed, there is light.

I wanted a room that could switch between the two.

Without needing too many words,
a room can say things on your behalf.

You’re all right.
You can stay just as you are.

I think this light is still quietly doing that work.

I’ve written more about the thinking behind this, and about the other spaces here.
